Climbing for All: Disability Awareness

Prowess Coaching is a provider of coach education workshops. These include the Climbing for All: Disability Awareness workshop.

The Climbing for All course is what I call a Coaching in Context course; looking at how we incorporate the existing BMC FUNdamentals courses into practice with disabled climbers. Where existing instructional courses (CWI, RCI, MCI etc) focus on keeping people safe in various environments, the Climbing for All course looks at the specifics of teaching climbing to disabled climbers.

What’s Covered on Climbing for All

Climbing for All looks at refining our delivery of climbing coaching and instruction specific to disabled climbers. This includes:

  • Types of disability. Defining different types of disability people may have
  • Models of disability and delivery. We break down the two different models of disability and three models of delivery open to us
  • Practical delivery of sessions. Including providing side support to a climber and building a hoist system
  • Language. We look at appropriate and inappropriate language when working with disabled climbers
  • Breaking techniques down. We look at how to break climbing techniques down in relation to disabled climbers using a model of my own design, the Abdall Diagram
  • Further information including success stories and a look at the paraclimbing competition scene

Each workshop is a one-day event and is a mix of classroom based and practical learning (as practical as possible) so bring your rock shoes and get ready to get on the wall! However don’t expect us to be trying super hard. The focus is on coaching and there is no minimum grade requirement. In the event of injury – or even if you choose not to climb – there is no requirement to climb at all, although we generally find most people are psyched to get on the wall.

After the course, you’ll be provided with a link to the Climbing for All Resource page. Here, you’ll be able to download the course slides, Course Notes and much more, as well as having a heap of further reading links.

These workshops are stacked with useful information to help you with your clients (or even your own climbing) all delivered in a super relaxed, super chilled out environment.
