Prowess Coaching is a provider of coach education workshops affiliated with Mountain Training and the BMC. In this workshop, I provide an evidence-based approach, detailing much of the academic theory that goes into designing and delivering coach education courses.

What’s Covered on this Workshop
Imagine a climber who wants to get better. They might go to a coach. But that coach would need training in order to learn how to help the climber, so they go to a coach educator. But how do those coach educators know how to teach? Well, perhaps they could come on this course. This is all about moving up the layers; kinda like the Inception of climbing coaching, but with less sedatives.
This course is less about climbing and more about teaching, learning and knowledge. We’ll look at:
- where our learning comes from. While this is classed as ‘formal education’ the question remains if that is actually our primary source of training or if it comes from elsewhere as well
- knowledge. We’ll look at different ways to view knowledge, how we acquire new knowledge and some academic theory, as well as how to put this into practice
- cognitive load. Any regular readers of the Resource Centre will know how much I value discussions on this topic and we’ll cover how it works when designing coach ed
- academia in practice. Everything in the workshop is backed up with an evidence-based approach (including references and further reading). However, it’s not abstract, it is all given context in terms of how to deliver to people
Each workshop two-hours, delivered remotely online. Be warned: this is not straightforward content and will be a lot to pack in. The good news, though, is it is transferable to any subject matter and even translates into good coaching too.

After the Course: the Resource Pack
This short workshop is heavy going with heaps of information. Being as there’s a lot of stuff to remember, each participant on the course will receive an email designed to give you something to refer back to: your resource pack.
Included in the pack is:
- The Course Slides
- Course Notes covering the content of the day
- Downloadable files covering many of the sections of the day
- A Prowess Reflection Sheet, which can also be used on any other course (with any provider) in the future
- Links to external articles and resources
- Links to relevant articles on the Prowess website
- Often more too, depending on the course
Each participant will receive an email to a password-protected page (with the password) to browse at your leisure.
