Drill: 30 Secs On, 30 Secs Off

Purpose:

A structure to help you develop physically for sport routes (as well as other disciplines too)

Where: on Auto Belay

This drill can be done on any hold types BUT you’ll need an auto belay.

When: any time

It’s tricky to know, this drill can be fit into any part of a session, although note it is quite physically demanding so make sure you are warm

The Drill:

This drill is based on the concept of power-endurance. While the concept may now be being challenged, the drill remains as a good exercise to help develop strength over time

KIT. You will need the following:

  • Interval timer set to 30 seconds, repeated 20 times (typically on your phone)
  • Headphones (so as not to disturb those around you)

Find yourself a route at your flash grade on auto belay.

  • First 30 seconds: when the timer starts, begin climbing
  • Continue climbing until the timer sounds again, 30 seconds later. Once the timer goes off, let go
  • The timer
  • Next 30 seconds: this is your rest period (including lowering off)
  • Repeat

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

Over time, you should find that you become fitter/better at climbing sport routes (and potentially other disciplines as well)
