Drill: Favourite Move (Episode 2)

Purpose:

To encourage you to begin some rudimentary profiling

NOTE: this drill should be conducted after completing Episode 1

Where: wherever you like

This drill can be done in any environment on any hold types.

When: during the Learning Window

You can complete this on any climb of any grade, as long as you can finish the route

The Drill:

Climb any route you choose, as normal.

  • Immediately after completing your route, read the route again in the same way that you climbed it
  • Once you have identified each move, select your favourite move on the route
  • Make notes on the specifics of that specific move including:
    • Hold type
    • Dynamic vs. Static
    • Hold orientation
    • Complexity of move
  • Move on to the next climb and repeat
  • Continue to make notes on as many climbs in different climbs as possible
  • Look back through your notes and begin to pick out any patterns in your favourite types of moves

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

This drill is subtly designed to get you to begin to identify your strengths. It is based on the idea that ‘we like to do what we’re good at’. Therefore, the moves that we enjoy the most are often the ones we are best at (not always but it’s a good starting point and if it is not the case, you’ll generally know and be able to identify similarly).
