Drill: Hips In, Hips Out (On the Floor)

Purpose:

To learn and refine a movement pattern that will help you to distribute your weight when climbing on overhangs

Where: flood based

This is a floor based drill that can be done anywhere

When: during the Warm Up

This is a floor-based exercise to be conducted before you start climbing (but can also be done at any time or at home)

The Drill:

Stand on a level floor, feet shoulder width apart

  • Move your hips forward
  • You should find that you cannot see your feet and that your heels have lifted from the floor
  • Feel the weight now in your toes
  • Now move your hips back until you can see your feet
  • You should find that your weight has shifted back on to your heels

Once you have mastered this, consider moving on to trying the drill On the Wall

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

Over time, you should find that you refine the movement pattern that allows you to shift the weight between your arms and your feet
