Drill: Rainbow Straight Ups

Purpose:

To encourage you to adapt to unusual or novel movement patterns

Where: on the bouldering wall

This drill is best completed on the bouldering wall, ideally where multiple lines overlap and run diagonally across the wall

When: any time during the session

This drill can be completed at any time in the session, as long as you can adjust the intensity to the stage of your session

The Drill:

I love Rainbow Straight Ups. You can use them when the wall haven’t set anything new for you for a while, for if you have young (i.e. very short) climbers or as a training drill, as we will do here.

  • Select an area of the wall where there are multiple lines overlapping each other.
  • Find a starting point where there are a variety of coloured holds above you
  • The aim is to climb in a straight line up the wall, using any holds that are in front of you

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

This drill, if completed over time, introduces new and novel climbing moves to your repertoire.
