Drill: Skip and Use Down

Purpose:

To force you to make solid, tactical decisions while remembering the choices you’ve made ready for later

Where: somewhere you feel comfortable bouldering

This drill involves climbing both up and down, as well as skipping holds. So it would be wise to pick somewhere you feel comfortable climbing.

The drill is likely significantly easier on a bouldering wall; roped climbs would be incredibly highly cognitive. That said, you could complete this by simply using a small part of a sport route if you are uncomfortable

When: during the Learning Window

This is going to be taxing so make sure you’ve got enough beans

The Drill:

Find yourself a really easy route with stacks of available holds

  • On the way up: Using the normal start and end holds, climb the route but skip as many holds as you can
  • On the way down: climb down the same route but crucially, you are not allowed to use ANY holds you used to get up to the top

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

This drill is designed to help you hone your decision making skills, as well as your memory. You should find that you are encouraged to plan your routes better, while also developing your recall
