Drill: The Flawless Route

Purpose:

To develop precision in our climbing, while developing concentration

Where: wherever you like

This drill can be done in routes or boulder problems but you can choose any route you wish.

When: during the Learning Window or Options

Climbs should be easy enough to allow thought process but not so easy as the drill feels contrived.

The Drill:

For The Flawless Climb, select climbs around your flash grade. It may help if they are climbs that you have completed before, they do not need to be new routes (new routes will increase the difficulty).

  • Climb the problem/route paying close attention to your movements
  • As soon as you make any move that is not flawless, drop off the climb and start again. Examples include: readjusting a hand; a foot not placed on exactly the right part of the hold; wobbling in a body position; lacking commitment to go for a move; etc.

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

Over time, you should find that your climbing movements are much more deliberate, your decision making becomes faster and your concentration skills improve on the climbs on which you turn it on.
