Purpose:
To encourage you to utilise different parts of your shoe when climbing and incorporate different movement patterns
Where: wherever you like
This drill needs a traverse wall of some description. You can use a bouldering wall or the bottom of ropes routes, as long as you don’t annoy the climbers also on the wall
When: during the Learning Window
Any traverse will suffice but to completely benefit, try one that you find slightly tricky

The Drill:
Select your chosen traverse climb
- Complete 7 moves in one direction (e.g. right) on your traverse
- Now complete 5 hand moves back in the other direction (e.g. left)
- Now complete another 7 moves in the first direction
- And now 5 moves back
- Repeat until at the end of the traverse
FOR EXTRA MARKS: repeat the exercise in the opposite direction
The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?
Over time, you should find that you start to twist in and out of the wall, in both directions, utilising inside and outside edges of each foot
