Drill: What Did I Do?

Purpose:

To encourage you to pick up on patterns in your own climbing

Where: wherever you like

This drill can be done in any environment on any hold types.

This drill can be completed on boulder problems, though routes tend to give more for you to see in one go

When: during the Learning Window

Climbs should be easy enough to allow thought process but not so easy as the drill feels contrived.

The Drill:

Note: you will need a mobile phone/video camera and preferably, a tripod for this drill

Climb a route and film yourself on the climb. Once finished, watch the footage back and ask yourself:

  • First: What did I do with my hands?
“How did the way I grasped the holds change as the holds changed?”
  • Second: What did I do with my feet?
“Where did my feet go compared to my handholds?”
  • Third: What did I do with my hips?
“Did my hips stay level all the way or do they move around and rotate?”
  • Fourth: What did I do with my head?
“Where am I looking during each move?”

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

Over time, you should start to pick up on patterns in the way you move and begin to consciously notice movements you do without thinking.
