Drill: Whistle Test

Purpose:

To allow you to explore body tension while moving on the wall, when you apply it and when to relax.

Where: vert or overhanging

This drill can be done on a slab but isn’t as effective. Ideally, you want climbs that are slightly overhanging.

When: during the Learning Window

Climbs should be easy enough to allow thought process but not so easy as the drill feels contrived.

The Drill:

Select your target climb but pause before you step on the route

  • Let out a quiet but constant whistle, as slowly as you can.
  • Try and maintain the whistle throughout the entire climb.
  • If you run out of breath (understandable), stay in the same position, take a deep breath and go again

NOTE: this drill does rely on the ability to whistle but it may be possible to achieve the same thing with humming instead

The Outcome: How do you know when it’s working?

This one gives immediate feedback. You should find that you are able to whistle while you are holding static positions but that the whistle stops while you move between holds.
